From our modest beginnings in East Stroudsburg to one of the largest community banks headquartered in Pennsylvania, ESSA Bank & Trust has always been committed to delivering the highest levels of service and value. Today, we combine the friendliness and agility of a local bank with the technology and resources of a large financial institution, to provide our customers with personalized banking services that allow them to efficiently manage their money, make the most of new opportunities, and reach their financial goals.
In the 100 years since John Gish and his associates opened the East Stroudsburg Building & Loan Association to support local homebuyers, we’ve never wavered in our commitment to the communities we serve. Originally formed to provide affordable residential mortgages to the people of East Stroudsburg, we have continuously grown to meet the changing needs of the community. More recently, our values of quality, stability, integrity and trust led us to transition from a privately held bank to a publicly traded corporation, fueling even greater expansion and enabling us to provide better service to the people of Eastern Pennsylvania.
John Gish and friends found the East Stroudsburg Building & Loan Association.
Building a strong foundation in the community, the bank’s total assets reach $1 million.
After more than 46 years of dedicated service, John Gish retires.
Merging with the Commonwealth Building & Loan Association and Keystone Building & Loan Association, the East Stroudsburg Savings Association (ESSA) is formed. With assets exceeding $20 million, the bank is now well-positioned for local and regional expansion.
ESSA opens its first branch office, located inside the Stroud Mall.
ESSA opens more than half a dozen locations in Northeastern Pennsylvania, moves its corporate headquarters to the same building as its new branch location on Main Street in Stroudsburg, PA, and exceeds $100 million in total assets.
ESSA continues its expansion, and establishes a partnership with Weis Markets. The bank’s first website is launched in 1996, and the ESSA Foundation is established in 1998, with 10 percent of the bank's annual net profits being dedicated to charitable causes.
ESSA completes construction of a new corporate headquarters. Total assets reach $500 million.
After forming ESSA Bancorp, Inc., ESSA becomes a publicly traded company with shares trading on the NASDAQ Global MarketSM.
Bolstered by public confidence in the strength of the company, ESSA has acquired several smaller banks and branch facilities in recent years, and opened a number of other new locations. With 26 branches from Scranton to Plymouth Meeting and assets of $1.8 billion, ESSA is now one of the largest banks in Pennsylvania.
ESSA has a long history of supporting the communities we serve. We have reaffirmed that support with funding exceeding $12 million to local non-profits through our charitable foundation; supporting organizations and causes such as community health, housing, education, arts, and parks and recreation. Many of our employees generously give their time, too—volunteering more than 8,500 hours per year at more than 100 local organizations.
A full-service community bank.
